What are cookies?

A cookie is a small file, typically of letters and numbers, downloaded on to a device when the user accesses certain websites. Cookies are then sent back to originating website on each subsequent visit. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device.

Many websites use cookies to remember information about which content has been accessed by a device. They can use this to keep people signed-in to a website between sessions, or to apply accessibility preferences to the pages. Many users and publishers find these uses of cookies to be convenient.
