GWR 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' with 'The Red Dragon' 11th March 2017
On 11th March 2017 "Vintage Trains Limited" VNTL ran "The Red Dragon" railtour from Tyseley (Warwick Road) in Birmingham to Cardiff Central and return being hauled by GWR Castle Class number 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe" steam locomotive throughout. The train ran perfectly to time and was captured on her outward journey as 1Z94 at Horton Rd Jct in Gloucester and also as she stood and departed from Gloucester Station in fine spirits. A run down into Wales brought me to Newport and the busy Maindee West Jct in time to see 5043 running LE around the "Maindee Triangle" in order to turn in readiness for her return journey later in the afternoon from Cardiff. I captured the return now running as 1Z95 again from the same location in Newport as she took the "Abergavenny" route back to Birmingham via Cosford. The weather was rather quite pleasant, albeit a little overcast but still and dry. It was nice to see this loco on the GWR and in these particular locations after a quite lengthy spell of time.
